While the update to improve particular groups and lists of friends is available from today, Marc Whitten confirmed that support for an external hard drive was always planned on Xbox One.

We learned recently that notification of friends would be also planned for the next update, it also States: "just as on Xbox 360, there will be regular updates on Xbox One. Some will be important as that of mars and others less. We are committed to provide continuous innovation through system updates."
We of course deeply regret the shortages of the Xbox One but it is well appreciated that Microsoft is listening to the players for improvements.
