The first year of Xbox One - Part Two

2014 is over and the year was rich in clues about what the future holds for Xbox One. Microsoft deploys indeed all sorts of tricks to make the console a better machine. Here are some tips:

DirectX12 and Windows 10 to the rescue

DirectX12 is expected, on the side of the developers, because it will unify under a single API all devices (PC / Tablet / Consoles) with Microsoft to load. This should simplify porting and development to the Xbox One. That said, the console, which already has a version of DirectX11.2 heavily modified, should not know too obvious performance gains, as Phil Spencer had confirmed via Twitter.

In terms of the integration of Windows 10, is less clear. Microsoft had the intention to meet its platforms under one operating system (also turns the console on Windows 8) and the Xbox One was even shown at the revelation of Windows 10 to computer and sides the tablet. In continuation of its unification process, it could be that Microsoft is making a big software update for its console ... or not.

Optimizations do you want, here is

Aware of the gap between the Xbox One of its competitor, Microsoft seeks to optimize his machine excessively to try to fill the power gap, which has its source in the choice of components, and memory types. The Cloud was often invoked as an alternative time but especially to the software part that turns Microsoft to try to minimize the differences. Many jobs posted on the Redmond company site proves that the manufacturer is actively seeking to improve performance. What form these optimizations will occur, he will determine their impact and how they exactly do they consist still remain unknown data at present. These will form part of a more comprehensive approach that Microsoft had begun with the release of 10% of memory previously reserved for Kinect.

A less intensive approach model?

The Xbox One could experience its first hardware revision soon. It has indeed been reported with the CV of Daniel Mc Connel (high-ranking AMD), a chip to the 20nm fabrication process was being prepared by the Texas manufacturer. This would mean that a model less greedy and colder APU (CPU / graphics chip, all in one) as that team would soon console product and it would go logically equip Xbox One in the near future.

In another, according to a job offer, Microsoft was looking for technicians who know and DDR4 memory for his team of engineers Xbox. DDR4 is a type of memory which has higher frequencies than DDR3 (the Xbox One has actuellemeny) and especially lower voltages. So, this job could indicate that Microsoft is looking to replace its DDR3 console, always with a view to reduce the power consumption and the internal temperature. Note, considering the price of the recent DDR4, this solution is not really viable.

All this could reduce the console manufacturing costs and prepare the ground for a less bulky Slim model. The Xbox 360 has had three internal reviews (Zephyr / Falcon / Jasper) before seeing the Slim model after four years. It may therefore still be a little early for the Xbox One.

The gamer concerns center

After its positioning as a machine "Swiss Army knife" (read multimedia), the Xbox One has gradually handed the game in its primary objective. Exit Don Mattrick, hello Phil Spencer, the former head of Microsoft Studios. Since coming to power, the head of the Xbox division has tried to put the games before, to the detriment of the rest. You can find more information about them on the page dedicated to them.

And Kinect into this?

Dissociated from the console at first, Kinect has moved from essential accessory to the status of fully dispensable accessory, or not far away. It is now possible to buy it separately for € 149.99.
